Twenty Things I've Learned in Twenty Years

It's my birthday month which makes me super excited! Honestly, my birthday is my favourite time of the year. I am one of those people who drag it out for a whole month. Yes, one of those people. Also, I'm trailing doing two posts every week which hopefully sticks. Anywho, I am someone who prides herself on being someone who is constantly growing and changing and obviously in the last twenty years of my life I've changed a lot. Besides the big changes such as learning how to walk, talk and how to text like a pro. Other than that, I've learned a lot of little life lessons along the way. None of them including how to do algebra, so thanks for that Mr Casey.

EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON
It's cliche but I am a true believer in this statement. It's helped a lot in my bid to stop feeling like such a victim of life's events.

NEVER BE AFRAID OF BEING ALONE
Alone time is valuable and precious. Everyone needs it, even the most extroverted person. It's a time to gather your thoughts and make grand plans.

DRINKING IS OVERRATED
It really is. Some people hail it as a magical liquid but we all know that tea is the real magical liquid here.

THERE IS NOTHING THAT A WARM, BUBBLE BATH CAN'T SOLVE

I've tested this method many, many times and I can guarantee you that it works. Just let the bubbles wash away all of your worries.

PEOPLE CHANGE AND SO WILL YOU
We're humans and we have an amazing ability to shape and mould who we are. Allow both yourself and others to change and grow.

NEVER BE ASHAMED OF WHAT YOU LOVE
For some reason, people love to put down others for what they love. Never ever let anyone make you feel embarrassed about your passion.

DON'T BE SO HARD ON YOURSELF
Stop putting so much pressure on yourself to be perfect. You're not perfect and chances are, you never will be. It'd be no fun having no room to grow.

IT'S OKAY TO FAIL
I've been told that if you're not failing, you're not trying hard enough so don't be afraid to fail. Always be ready to pick yourself up after.

NOT EVERYONE WILL LIKE YOU
Vice versa, too. It's just how the world works. My advice would be to stop even trying to be liked by everyone because frankly, it's a fruitless effort. Focus on liking yourself first.

MANNERS COST NOTHING
Not everyone got the memo about this but it costs absolutely nothing to be polite. You might just make someones day while you're at it.

THE BEST LOVE IS THE ONE YOU'RE NOT LOOKING FOR
This is another thing I wholeheartedly believe in. When you're looking, you're expecting something and it's much better to let these this be stripped of expectations.

YOU SHOULD LOVE YOURSELF MORE
Go and look in the mirror and tell yourself that you love yourself. Just say 'I love you'. Even if it takes a few times to say it before you believe it.

LEARN TO RELY ON YOURSELF
I used to heavily depend on others to feel happy, loved, beautiful etc. I've learned that I don't need anyone else to make me feel that way.

THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE FREE
Hugs, naps, friendships, sunsets, deep conversations. Need I say more? Stop using money to buy you things to make you happy, focus on what's free for a second.

GO AT YOUR OWN PACE
Three years together and not engaged? That's fine. Twenty and a Mum of two? Also fine. Forty and going to uni for a degree? Fine, too. Go at your own pace. Life is not some race with everyone else.

A BAD DAY DOESN'T MEAN A BAD LIFE
I used to be so melodramatic as a teenager, complaining about how hard my life was for trivial reasons. Now, I have a little moan and brush things off, life's good.

THE STUFF IN MINCE PIES ISN'T MEAT, IT'S FRUIT
I've never eaten a mince pie before so I have no idea what's inside. Apparently, it's not mincemeat, it's minced fruit. Strange.

SAVE YOUR MONEY, PLEASE

If I had a pound for everytime someone told me this then I'd have no need to save. However, it's super important so take my advice because I learned the hard way.

TIME HEALS EVERYTHING
Another cliche, Katie? Yes, but it's another true one. Time really does heal everything. I had times in my teens when I thought I'd feel crap forever but never did. Sometimes we just have to wait it out.

ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE PRESENT
We live in a world that constantly has their heads in their phones. Let yourself enjoy things without some sort of technology. Watch a sunset without photographing it.

Wow, I didn't realise just how much I've learned in the last twenty years, it's kind of crazy. I hope you enjoyed my list of life lessons. Maybe one or two can be of help to you. Anywho, I'm off. Have a lovely day and stay beautiful.

  1. Hi Katie!
What a heartening and affirming post to read! Absolutely love all your life lessons but the ones about never being ashamed of what you love and going at your own pace especially struck a chord with me.
Hope you're having a good birthday month, my love!
